What it is

Teeth change colour for many reasons: coffee, tea, cola and other coloured foods, smoking, some medications, an injury, or a tooth that has had its nerve removed. Whitening gels based on hydrogen or carbamide peroxide pass into the enamel and dentin, where they break down the pigments that cause discolouration. The structure of the tooth isn't changed — only its colour becomes lighter.

In the clinic we first clean your teeth professionally, protect your gums, and then apply a 35–38 % hydrogen peroxide gel in two 20-minute sessions with a short break in between. Whitening works on natural teeth only; crowns, veneers and fillings keep their colour. It isn't recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for people under 18, or within five years of radiotherapy.

Suitable for

  • Natural teeth that have yellowed or darkened

Aftercare

Every treatment starts with a consultation. The information here is general — your dentist will tell you what applies to you.

  • Avoid coffee, tea, red wine, cola and smoking for 48 hours
  • Mild sensitivity is normal and fades within a day or two
  • Use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth if needed
  • Avoid very hot or cold food and drink for the first day
  • Don't use over-the-counter whitening products, which can damage enamel

Questions

Questions, answered.

  • Not when it's done properly under a dentist's supervision. Enamel, dentin, fillings and crowns aren't damaged. Do-it-yourself cosmetic products are less effective and can harm enamel.

  • Some people feel mild, temporary sensitivity for a day or two. The gels we use contain fluoride, which helps reduce it.

  • Results commonly last one to three years, depending on what you eat and drink, whether you smoke, and how well you care for your teeth.
